With just its tiny head above the sand, the seal pup could easily have been mistaken for a rock or some flotsam. But thanks to an observant photographer the young animal, buried up to its neck in sand between sea defence boulders, was saved.

Three people worked to rescue the grey seal pup which had become wedged among the rocks at Waxham, on the northeast Norfolk coast, at high tide. When the tide went out the pup was left trapped in the sand, which closed in around it. It could have drowned at the next high tide.

It was spotted by a photographer walking along the seafront on Friday afternoon, who contacted the Friends of Horsey Seals.
