Chely Wright, the American country music singer and LGBT activist, has said a New York Times opinion piece speculating over the sexuality of Taylor Swift was “awful” and should not have been published.

Swift’s team condemned the article over the weekend, describing it as “invasive, untrue and inappropriate”.

The piece, written by Anna Marks, a New York Times editor, suggested that the pop superstar had dropped clues in her music and performances about being closeted.

Swift, 34, is a prominent supporter of the LGBT community and fans have long claimed to have spotted clues about her sexuality in her music, though she has only ever publicly dated men.
