Baftas 2024 longlist: stars can choose gender-neutral awards

Bafta will allow performers to abandon gendered categorisation, it has emerged, after the film academy released the longlists for this season’s awards, which put Barbie in pole position.

All nominees and winners in the four acting categories can request that their certificates and mask plaques “be revised to carry the term ‘performer’, rather than ‘actor’ or ‘actress’”.

The academy said, however, that creating gender-neutral categories, as had been introduced by other organisations, including the Berlin Film Festival and the Brit Awards, was still under discussion.
