Come the spring, after the Six Nations, the Gallagher Premiership will stage quite the play-off bunfight. Bath placed themselves firmly in that mix with a win over Gloucester in an unmemorable derby that resulted in them rising to third in the tightly packed table.

They did not manage to take a try-scoring bonus point, as Tom de Glanville scored two tries and Will Muir one, and that could prove costly come May as the league is so squeezed.

After Northampton Saints had beaten Exeter Chiefs 42-36, Bristol Bears had won 22-14 away against Sale Sharks, Harlequins had eased past Newcastle Falcons 24-3 and Leicester Tigers had secured a 19-10 win over Saracens, Bath needed a victory to keep up the quickening pace. Especially so after
