Have you dusted off your girandoles? Are your chandeliers disco ready? What about your shoulder grazers? Baffled by the vocabulary? They’re all statement party earrings, a style that’s back in all its over-the-top glory.

First, a little decoding. A girandole is no newcomer to the jewellery scene: it became fashionable in the 18th century — think rose-cut diamond drops twinkling in a candlelit room. Sticklers for accuracy will want a central design motif, often a bow or similar, with three pear-shaped stones suspended underneath. David Morris, Gucci and Graff have some great modern-day versions. But the most covetable of all? Rare originals that occasionally come up for auction, having survived centuries without being separated.

Next, a chandelier — a loose term for an elaborate dangly earring. Here movement is key, plus multiple stones that should swish and sway with the wearer. Bulgari has cleverly incorporated the scales of its Serpenti snake house motif into a graphic pair, while Chaumet’s fern-inspired high jewellery versions are botanical beauties. And last, the shoulder grazer — perhaps the chicest option of all. Go for extreme length (the tips should, ideally, just brush against your shoulders), and they should be as slender as possible. Single strands of diamonds by Hollie Bonneville Barden at Bucherer Fine Jewellery will see you through the party season and well into the new year.
