BFI’s first streaming boss: Apple TV’s Jay Hunt to get key job

The former BBC executive is set to be first chief not to join the UK arts giant straight from a traditional film or TV role

The boss of Apple TV+ in Europe is to be appointed this week as chairwoman of the British Film Institute, a key job in the arts industry.

Jay Hunt, 56, will be the first BFI chief to come from a streaming service instead of a traditional broadcaster, film studio or multiplex chain — a sign of how far the cinema landscape has shifted in recent years.

Her predecessors include Richard Attenborough, the actor and producer; Greg Dyke, the former BBC director-general; and Josh Berger, latterly boss of Warner Bros in the UK.

Hunt, a former controller of BBC1 and head of programmes at Channel 4, will also become the first woman to chair the BFI since the broadcaster Joan Bakewell stepped down in 2002. The
