For centuries, an extravagant bouquet has been a fixture on Valentine’s Day as a sign of enduring affection.

But true love could take a hit as new post-Brexit rules threaten flower imports in what the industry has described as a “disaster waiting to happen”.

From the end of January, the UK is set to introduce new paperwork requirements for EU businesses that send animal or plant products to Britain, with inspections to start in April.

Industry bodies have expressed “significant concerns” that wholesalers are not ready for the change, and the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB) called for the checks to be delayed until 2025.
