China accuses ‘foreign consultant’ of spying for MI6

Beijing says Britain used suspect to build intelligence co-operation relationship

China has arrested an alleged spy, trained and equipped by Britain, who acquired “state secrets” while working as a consultant, the country’s state security agency claimed on Monday.

In a post on social media, the ministry of state security said the person, identified only as Huang, had worked with Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service — also known as MI6 — since 2015 and had been supplied with “special espionage equipment” by the agency.

The statement did not provide further details of Huang’s identity or employer, nor describe their current condition or whereabouts, although he was described as the citizen of a “third country” — neither Britain nor China.
