Colorado has released five grey wolves into a remote region of the Rocky Mountains as part of a controversial reintroduction plan.

Voters approved the most ambitious wolf reintroduction effort in the US in almost three decades, despite staunch opposition from farmers who fear their livestock will be preyed upon.

Colorado’s cattle industry had launched a last-minute attempt to halt the release of the wolves but a judge denied the request, leaving wildlife officials free to launch the programme.

This week, a group of about 45 people including the Jared Polis, the governor of Colorado, gathered in the Rockies to free the wolves. The exact location has been withheld to protect the predators.
