People often talk about entrepreneurship as “going it alone”, but actually building a business is all about building a network of people who are rooting for it. So one of the most important skills of any leader is attracting talented people and convincing them to come on the journey.

Unfortunately it is also far too easy to make hiring mistakes that are painful for both the business and the wider team. I should know: having started my first business aged 21, with no experience of working for anyone, let alone recruiting anyone, I must have made every error possible. From ignoring high-decibel CV alarm bells to foolishly letting my heart rule my head, my bad experiences, as well as the many good ones, eventually helped
