Golden Globes 2024 winners: Oppenheimer’s sweep shows blockbusters are back
A triumphant night for Christopher Nolan’s film at the awards in Los Angeles, with Succession the big winner in the television category

The message from the Golden Globes was “the establishment strikes back”, and it was delivered as loudly as the 20-kilotonne nuke in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the film that dominated the night. With wins in five big categories — including best director (Nolan), best actor (Cillian Murphy) and best drama — the Oppenheimer triumph was a clear sign that this will be the one to beat at the Oscars. The victory also represents a conspicuous shift in awards season politics from a focus on smaller indies such as Parasite, Nomadland and Coda, and back into the arms of mega-budget Tinseltown product.
Oppenheimer made “$1 billion at the box office”, said the film’s co-star Robert Downey Jr when collecting his gong for supporting actor.
