A top Hezbollah commander has been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon as Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, met Middle East leaders in an effort to contain the war.

Hezbollah identified the commander as Wissam Hassan Tawil. Lebanese media reported he was killed in an airstrike on his vehicle in southern Lebanon, days after Hezbollah launched a massive barrage of rockets at an Israeli aerial surveillance base. Israel confirmed that they hit a Hezbollah military site with airstrikes.

Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, had warned the Iran-aligned militants on Sunday of further action if it continued to strike at Israel. Hezbollah said its most recent attack was in revenge for Israel’s killing of Saleh al-Arouri, a senior Hamas commander, in a drone
