Palestinian Authority must be transformed to run Gaza
Such are the divisions within the Israeli government, that Yoav Gallant’s blueprint for the future governance of Gaza was never presented at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Instead, the late-night gathering descended into acrimony over an investigation into intelligence failure, breaking up before it was able to consider the subject Binyamin Netanyahu has refused to discuss for the past three months. Gallant’s proposal for a Palestinian body to take over civil affairs in Gaza after Hamas is defeated chimes closely with Washington’s preferred option, that a reformed and revitalised Palestinian Authority takes over governance.
Netanyahu dismissed the proposal as a “pipe dream” days ago. He said: “It funds and glorifies terrorism in Judea and Samaria and educates Palestinian children to seek the destruction of Israel.”
