Iran explosion: bomb blasts near Qasem Soleimani’s grave kill 84

The explosions in Kerman province happened during a ceremony to mark the fourth anniversary of the assassination of the Iranian general

The tree–lined path to the cemetery was crowded as the first blast struck. General Qasem Soleimani was Iran’s premier military national hero, his grave a secular shrine for devotees of the Islamic Republic and on the anniversary of his death a site for a well-organised mass memorial.

The explosion, 700 yards from the grave, ripped through the mourners as they queued. A second, 20 minutes later, bigger but 300 yards further away, sent more shrapnel flying through the air. At least 84 people were killed in what is believed to have been the worst terror attack in Iran since the 1979 revolution, with another 284 people wounded.
