Israeli forces have pounded the Gaza Strip by land, air and sea in the most intensive series of attacks since October 7 after the country’s military chief warned that the conflict with Hamas would grind on for “many more months”.

Israeli media reported that Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, and his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, were refusing to discuss US demands for a transition away from the “high intensity” phase of fighting to one with fewer civilian casualties.

Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu was refusing to hold discussions with senior security officials over “day after” plans for the control and governance of Gaza after Hamas’s defeat. The US has said it would like to see a reformed Palestinian Authority take control of the strip, which
