An Israeli teenager has become the first person to be jailed as a conscientious objector since the Hamas attacks of October 7 unleashed a new conflict in Gaza.

Tal Mitnick, 18, was jailed for 30 days after he went to an army recruitment centre with other protesters to announce his refusal to enlist in what he called “a war of revenge”.

Mitnick was part of a movement of young Israelis who originally said that they would refuse to enlist for compulsory military service in protest at Binyamin Netanyahu’s war on Israel’s Supreme Court and the occupation of Palestinian Territories.
