Israeli soldiers killed three hostages in Gaza after mistaking their cries for help as a Hamas ruse to draw them into an ambush, an official military investigation into the incident has found.

The killing of the three Israeli hostages, who were shirtless and carrying a white flag, stunned the country and prompted renewed pressure from hostage families for a new ceasefire agreement to bring home the remaining captives.

The December 15 incident, swiftly admitted by Israel’s military, was also cited by human rights groups as evidence supporting claims that Israel had repeatedly opened fire on Palestinian civilians carrying white flags as they evacuated their homes.
