Sandra Garza finds it hard to see Donald Trump’s face as the former president criss-crosses the early primary states in his campaign to regain the White House. “Every time January 6 rolls around it’s a huge reminder,” she said. “He saunters into court. He saunters onstage at rallies, smiling. It’s like he’s untouchable.”

Her partner of 11 years, the police officer Brian Sicknick, was on duty when Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. As the mob pushed through the barricades, the 42-year-old officer was pepper-sprayed in the face. Sicknick returned to the fray, staying at the Capitol deep into the evening, but later that night he collapsed and was rushed to hospital. He suffered two strokes and died the next day.
