French cinema is facing fresh controversy after the actress Judith Godrèche denounced a film-maker with whom she had a relationship when she was 15 and he 40.

Godrèche, now 51, who is a household name in France, spoke out to claim that Benoît Jacquot, the award-winning director, was still “manipulating” women while enjoying “impunity” in the French movie industry.

Her words come with the country’s cultural sector split over Gérard Depardieu, 75, the veteran actor facing multiple accusations of rape and sexual assault, which he denies. President Macron and many actors of Depardieu’s generation have defended him, while younger stars have criticised him.
