Met’s war crimes poster appeal is a troubling overreach

The Metropolitan Police may be the country’s biggest force but the collective brainpower of its leadership comes across as vanishingly small. The latest example of the Met’s dimwittedness is a poster campaign appealing for witnesses to crimes against humanity in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
The posters at British airports carry this message to returning travellers: “If you have witnessed or been a victim of terrorism, war crimes or crimes against humanity, then you can report this to the UK police.” Surely anyone who has come face to face with acts of inconceivable horror that leave them traumatised hardly needs their memory jogged by a police poster.
