Miriam Margolyes is being pushed aside by an actors’ charity which claims to want more diversity.

The Harry Potter actress, 82, who has described herself as a “fat Jewish lesbian”, might be seen as a one-woman cornucopia of protected characteristics.

Yet Margolyes has failed to make the list of recommended candidates for the trustees’ council of the £36 million Actors’ Benevolent Fund (ABF) whose new motto is “kindness, integrity, inclusivity”.

The charity’s decision to issue ballot papers with a list of recommended candidates and another list of “other candidates” risks fuelling what the Charity Commission has condemned as a bitter and harmful dispute.
