Kuntal Fisher was in her early 20s and in the throes of a new romance when, out of the blue, she was hospitalised with stomach pains and severe anaemia.

Eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2009 — an auto-immune condition that has no cure — Fisher had to take ten pills a day to try and ease the symptoms. She loved her job as a management consultant so continued working, eager not to let the illness slow her progression, but her confidence plummeted.

“I used to run a lot — that was my stress relief — and then not being able to do that because you don’t know when you’re going to need the toilet, or if you’re going to faint, it just knocks you
