Paris has become the first city in the world to name a street after David Bowie as officials claimed that it had a special bond with the late British pop star.

The claim by Paris council was met with widespread scepticism as critics questioned the pertinence of naming what one called a “miniscule” alley after one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Some suggested the initiative was a badly thought out public relations stunt.

The Socialist-run council held a ceremony to mark the creation of Rue David Bowie on what would have been his 77th birthday.

The street, which is next to Le Monde’s newspaper offices in eastern Paris, is under construction and the first inhabitants are expected to move into the blocks
