Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has fished another estimated £30 million out of the capital’s coffers to avert a potentially destructive strike on the Tube system. The last minute discovery of the cash came as a relief to commuters, to the teachers and children struggling to get to school, to health workers and carers. Four million people a day use the London Underground and the RMT (Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) union was threatening to gum up the city by walking out for almost all of the working week.

The mayor evidently believes that he will now be greeted as a saviour. Certainly, he calculates that he has made an important political point on behalf of his Labour Party in an election year. His
