Strikes on the London Underground have been called off 20 minutes before they were due to start.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) were due to walk out from Monday until the end of the week in protest at a 5 per cent pay offer. The strike would have stopped almost all Tube services and caused travel chaos in the capital.

Passengers were being advised by Transport for London (TfL) to complete their journeys by 5.30pm today to avoid a rush before the widespread suspension next week. At 5.10pm, RMT confirmed that the strikes would not go ahead.
