On a 12-hour train journey from Kyiv to Chelm, there is plenty of time to talk to your neighbours. Especially during a two-hour stop at the Polish border, when multiple security checks are inflicted on the passengers of a massive train with about 20 carriages. While this rigmarole was being carried out, one of the three Ukrainian women with whom I shared a four-person sleeper compartment — she was called Kseniia — invited me to sit on her bunk, below mine, to talk about her country’s troubles over cups of black tea.
