Ukraine war: Russian missiles hit Kyiv and key cities

Maternity hospital and shopping malls targeted as Putin launches airstrikes on the capital as well as Kharkiv, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Odesa

Russia launched the heaviest bombardment of the war so far, killing at least 31 Ukrainian civilians and injuring 160 in a prolonged assault designed to overwhelm the country’s air defences.

A total of 158 missiles and kamikaze drones were fired towards Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and ­Odesa, with the targets including a maternity hospital, a shopping centre and a ­kindergarten.

Poland accused Russia of violating Nato airspace for three minutes after an errant missile strayed 24 miles across the border.

In Kyiv, residents took cover in their basements during the early hours of yesterday and in the afternoon. Nine people died and 30 were wounded.
