In sexist F1, will we ever have a female world champion?

The sport is attracting more and more female fans yet there are still too many barriers preventing women from reaching the top

One of the days recorded as “historic” in motor racing this past year was in late September, when Jessica Hawkins, a 28-year-old from Hampshire, test-drove 26 laps of the Hungaroring in an Aston Martin AMR21. She was the first woman to drive a modern Formula 1 car in nearly five years.

This was apparently a breakthrough, even though she was given an old car, no one to race against and no time or stats were subsequently released. Thanks, guys.

I was struck by the language she used in a subsequent interview. “Just to be given this opportunity by the team,” she said, “genuinely it’s been the best day of my life.”
