In 1816 the first trial of Sir Humphry Davy’s safety lamp with a wire mesh took place at Hebburn colliery, northeast England; in 1960 work began on the Aswan (High) Dam in Egypt. It was inaugurated in 1971, enabling control of the annual Nile flood, but reducing the natural fertility of farmland; in 1972 coalminers walked out on strike at midnight in a seven-week dispute over pay. A state of emergency was declared on February 9 because of power shortages; in 1986 Michael Heseltine resigned as defence secretary after a row with the prime minister Margaret Thatcher over the sale of the UK-owned Westland helicopter company; in 1997 the Vendée Globe race competitor Tony Bullimore was rescued four days after his 60ft yacht had capsized in the Southern Ocean, having survived in an air pocket of the hull (Obituary, August 1, 2018).

Hunched in a leafless oak, facing into the drizzle, it could have been a buzzard; but through binoculars its sleek grey head and yellow beak became clear, and when it shifted position a deep fork was visible in its tail. It was a red kite, now well established in coastal East Anglia: 150 miles from the place where they were reintroduced to Britain back in the early 1990s having become all but extinct. Red kites are far better scavengers than they are predators, making them unsuited to falconry; it may seem undignified for such a noble-looking raptor, but they also enjoy vast amounts of worms.
